Microsoft hired a top cybercrime expert from PricewaterhouseCoopers last week to head its computer security efforts, which chairman Bill Gates last month called the company's highest priority.

Microsoft hired a top cybercrime expert from PricewaterhouseCoopers last week to head its computer security efforts, which chairman Bill Gates last month called the company's highest priority. Scott Charney, a principal at the consulting firm, will have the title of chief security strategist when he starts work at Microsoft on April 1. Before joining PricewaterhouseCoopers in 1999, Charney spent eight years at the Justice Department as chief of computer crime and intellectual property, investigating and prosecuting hacker cases.
