Two rivals in the growing biometric security sector last week decided to combine their offerings in a $600 million all-stock merger.

Identix, in Los Gatos, Calif., will unite its fingerprint-scanning system with the facial-recognition products of Visionics, in Jersey City, N.J. It "should be good news for IT executives interested in adding biometric security" cost-efficiently, says Michael Dortch, principal analyst at the Robert Frances Group. He says the new company also could add voice verification.
